In an unprecedented tragedy in the State, 6 Die after a Bus plunges in Calvim River at Aldona Ferry wharf; one woman still missing

In a tragic incident that took place at around 12.30 noon on Saturday, a bus bearing registration number GA 01 V 2283 with many passengers onboard plunged into the river near the ferry wharf in Aldona after spinning  out of control after the bus’ brakes failed..  Six bodies, including those of 4 children and two adults, one man and one woman, were fished out from the water. It was sad to note that with no disaster management plan in place, 2 hours elapsed without the bus being removed  from the river water. Even the coastal police who reached the spot came without adequate equipment. It was only later, that 2 cranes were pressed into service to pull out the bus. After the bus slipped into the water,  the driver of the bus and another passenger managed to swim to  safety. The police have arrested Rajesh Naik, the bus driver who incidentally is also the owner of the bus .
